Care of Your Tailored Suit

Like any other investment in your future, it is essential that you protect your wardrobe with proper maintenance and care. However, that is not something that most of us are taught how to do. Here are a few tips from the pros here at Well Suited:

Hanging your Suit

It is best to hang up your fine tailored clothing as soon as you get home. If you have a good clothing brush, brush the garment (with the nap, if there is one). Never use a wire hanger. Instead, use a wide, curved wooden hanger for the coat. Trousers should be hung with the inner seams lined up and cuffs together, preferably by the cuffs on a wooden trouser hanger, or folded over a hanger with a wooden dowel. Hanging them by the cuffs is best for relaxing wrinkles and making them look neat for the next wearing. If your garment gets damp, allow it to breathe and dry before putting it into the closet. Hang it on a proper wooden hanger over the back of an open door until dry.

Wrinkled SuiT

When wrinkled from too much everyday wear or traveling, hang the suit in a closed bathroom and turn the shower on hot, with the trousers hanging from the cuffs, if possible. Steam works wonders to relax the wrinkles, but be careful not to let it get near the shower water. After ten minutes of steam, vigorously shake the garment and hang it up to dry. Do not wear until dry.

Dry Cleaning

Dry cleaning fine tailored clothing should be like having oral surgery - as often as necessary, as infrequently as possible! Heat and chemicals are very hard on a garment's fabric and structure.

It will look its best, and wear much longer if you just have it pressed occasionally and only have it cleaned when absolutely necessary. With regular use of a good clothing brush, and a quality clothing steamer, you can minimize the cost and the effects of dry cleaning.

If you rotate five to ten suits or sport outfits in your wardrobe, dry cleaning once or twice a year should suffice. As a side note, for best results, never wear a garment directly from the dry cleaners. Allow it to dry at least 24 hours in your closet. It is also good to remove the garment from the wire hanger provided by the cleaners, and place it on its original wooden hanger immediately.

Traveling in your suit

Always remove your coat before sitting down for extended periods on planes, trains and in cars. If possible, hang it up; if not, gently fold it wrong side out in half vertically along the back seam. Then lay it down on a seat or overhead bin as flatly as possible.

Daily Maintenance

It is a good idea to keep a lint roller or good lint brush at home, at the office, and even in your car. Also, we would suggest keeping a can of spot cleaner at home and at the office. It is great for removing ink, grease, wine and salad dressing.

Despite all the special care you give your favorite suit, there eventually comes a point in the relationship when it must be replaced with another fine garment. We look forward to showing you our outstanding current season's collection, at your convenience.

The Levels of Fit for Tailored Clothing

Custom-Made / Made to Measure

Many retailers use these terms interchangeably. These garments are made one at a time to a specific pattern designed to accommodate a customer's unique body features such as posture, shoulder slope, and the customer's measurements: over arm, chest, waist, seat, rise, etc. These garments may be sewed all by hand or all by machine or a combination of both. The more handwork and the more expensive the cloth (and findings), the higher the price of the garment.

Bench-Made Custom

This is the top of the line that takes a master tailor months to deliver. It is very much like the description of made to measure/custom-made. The difference is a full bench-made custom garment is all made by hand and requires five or six fittings during the construction. This is very expensive and time consuming. These garments are normally priced from $3,500 plus the price of the cloth. The look and fit of each suit is in direct relationship to the abilities and talents of the tailor. Many fit the body but are designed poorly so they look strange. Some may have thousands of hand stitches but aren't comfortable to wear. This explains why tailors that cater to this market tend to specialize in making either coats or trousers. Some design patterns, cut cloth, baste, or fit garments. Consistency of fit from one tailor to another isn't possible because it is an art form and not scientific. Well Suited has blended the best of old-world craftsmanship and state-of-the-art technology to provide the best fitting, well-balanced and comfortable clothing at the best value in the country.

By Special Order

This is where the garment is made to standard ready-made sizes but the coat size and pant size can be chosen (e.g., coat 42R and pants 34S). Some special order programs also allow the style to be specified (e.g., 2 button, 3 button, double-breasted, plain front, pleated, etc.) Extra pants can also be ordered since everything is made after the customer chooses the cloth.

Average Size

S, M, L, XL, XXL - Many manufacturers are making coats like sport shirts. These are more casual and can be sold by self-service retailers. This greatly reduces the inventory investment for the store.

By Size

Most "off the peg" or ready-made coats and suits are sold as 40R, 42L, 44S, etc. These are by chest size and lengths S, R, L, and XL. The trouser waist is made six inches smaller than the coat. For example, a 40 coat would have a 34 trouser.

Separates Program

These are ready-made coats and pants that are sold individually and not as suits. This allows a customer to select a trouser different than the standard ready-made size. For example, a 36S trouser can be matched with a 40R coat. Normally a 40R suit comes with a 34R trouser. This offers a great deal of flexibility and solves a lot of fitting problems. Also, a customer can buy two pair of pants with this mix and match system.
